At Turkana Gear, innovation isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s the name of the game. Transforming a straightforward adventure soft baggage idea into a product that’s ready to hit the market is no walk in the park. We work relentlessly through each idea to a point where we know what motorcycle riders and outdoor travellers demand. What’s our mission? To whip up soft luggage waterproof gear that truly amps up a rider’s or travellers experience.
Turning Ideas Into Reality
We start our design process by tackling adventure riders’ challenges in the real world. Concepts develop from fleeting thoughts (called “brain farts”) over time.
The Design Adventure:
Kicking Off with Design and Engineering
●This is where ideas are jostled; we beat each other to accept ideas, evolve, and bring them to life through hand-drawn sketches, paper mock-ups, and makeshift prototypes.
●We scavenge for materials like old hostel sheets and airline blankets and Walmart carton boxes to whip up our early prototypes. Who knew crafting could be such a treasure hunt to create prototypes?
●We take a thorough look at every idea to make sure it checks all the boxes for functionality, durability, and affordability.
●Teaming up with our factories means our quirky process turns into designs that are not just wild ideas but actually ready for the assembly line.
With the emphasis on the user.
Emphasis on design—we focus on what you’ll be using the soft baggage or outdoor product for—people pack differently for a short, lightweight enduro ride than for a long-week adventure trip on a large, loaded adventure motorbike. The same goes for travellers, hikers, kayakers, and overlanders.
Testing: Breaking for Better
Testing is always fun.
Testing is where the thrill begins—and the chaos, of course! Every product gets put through the wringer in real-world tests to make sure it actually does what it’s supposed to do!
● Hands-On Testing: We get our hands dirty testing gear alongside a crew of seasoned riders who know the ins and outs of off-road, enduro, and adventure excursions.
● Real World Scenarios: We look into everything, from how the parts fit and shape on different motorcycles to how long they last in extreme situations and use.
● Always levelling up: We’re in a constant state of testing, redesigning, and retesting to make sure our products not only meet but totally crush expectations.
● We do not rely on our manufacturers to make sure the products meet minimum standards. That is simply not how we roll. We set our own requirements and then make sure our products meet those—it is a process we take very seriously.
Real Adventures, Real Testing
● In the end, when the fat lady has sung, there is nothing like real-world travel luggage testing by using and abusing the gear during amazing trips.
There’s no substitute for the insights gained from using and abusing gear in the environments it’s designed for—whether that’s rugged trails, remote landscapes, or extended overland journeys. The kind of adventures it was made for!
● We trust our travel passion and design concepts made our products useful to our customers. We continually challenge conventional thinking and reconsider the usual.
Making the same old takes little. However, we favour developing new and exciting products that our fellow customers will enjoy using!
